Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home senior care franchise that employs active seniors to help their fellow seniors age in place is promoting awareness about healthy aging for the seniors in our lives. As we age, drawing on the “back to school” urge embedded in everyone from childhood, September is the perfect time to celebrate Healthy Aging Month. The observance month’s activities are designed to encourage people to rejuvenate and engage positive measures that can impact the areas of physical, social, financial, and mental wellness.
For seniors, maintaining a healthy body and mind is hugely important. By not eating well or maintaining their health, seniors put themselves at risk of illnesses that could lead to long term issues.
Seniors Helping Seniors® services offer the following tips for seniors to maintain a balanced mind and body:
- Get moving. Activity can be as simple as walking just ten or fifteen minutes, three to four times a week and increasing as you go.
- Maintain a Healthy Diet. Healthy eating is a big part of staying healthy, and the USDA emphasizes the need for more vegetables and fruits in the American diet – recommending five a day. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to avoid excessive processed foods.
- Stay Social. Decreases in interaction with friends and family lead to health issues and isolation can lead to depression. Instead of feeling lonely and bored, reach out and invite friends and family over!
- Get Regular Physicals. If you’re not feeling well, don’t “wait for it to go away.” You know yourself and your body well enough to detect if there is something out of the ordinary., so listen to your body!
